Bill and Amy Gurley donate $1,000,000.00 to Dickinson Harvey Relief Fund

Mayor Julie Masters is proud to announce that Bill and Amy Gurley have made a gracious donation to the Dickinson Harvey Relief Fund.

Bill is a former resident of Dickinson, as his dad worked for NASA and the family moved to the area when Johnson Space Center opened. He graduated from Dickinson High School in 1984. Bill’s mother, Lucia Gurley, was a prominent figure in the community for over 38 years, serving as a substitute teacher, library volunteer, and key contributor to Keep Dickinson Beautiful. Lucia was also a City Council Member for 11 years.

Bill and Amy were heartbroken to hear of the devastation in Dickinson because of Hurricane Harvey. Dickinson, with an annual average rainfall of 53 inches per year, received more than 50 inches of rain in a 72 hour period. More than 7,300 homes in Dickinson were damaged by the historic flooding. Over 50 percent of those homes are considered either “major damage” or “destroyed”, displacing an estimated 7,900 residents.

In recognition of the immense need in Dickinson, and in honor of his mother’s significant contribution to this community, Bill and his wife, Amy, have decided to donate one million dollars to the Dickinson Harvey Relief Fund. There have been many remarkable fundraising efforts as a result of Hurricane Harvey, and Bill and Amy are both moved by the generosity of Les Alexander, JJ Watt, Michael Dell, and countless others. Bill and Amy wanted to ensure that this small and vibrant community of Dickinson also has the resources it needs to rebuild.
